Sony just announced its latest development on flexible displays in a Japanese Education IT Solutions Expo – a 13 inch display E-paper called E in Mobius. The amazing device is seen again in the SID 2013 in Vancouver, Canada. Sony even showed their audience a standalone flexibile screen inside the device.
From some sources in other countries, it seems this Sony 13 inch E-paper uses Mobius ink screens developed by E-ink Holdings. This screen is made with TFT technology and has a 1200 x 1600 resolution. The textual presentation performance is outstanding.
The Mobius ink screen has a degree of flexibility and it only 60g in weight. In addition, this ink screen is extremely energy efficient and it is ideal for producing big screens for portable reader gadgets.
Sony officially confirmed the E Ink Mobius E-paper will be launched later this year but without specific dates and pricing information. However, it seems some preliminary data shows that it is certainly more expensive than an iPad made by Apple. Price will be one of the biggest concern before this technology becomes prevalent.
