So we knew that NEC has decided to sell its NEC mobile sector and its overseas market is also in a decline. The captioned NEC foldable dual screen smartphone might not ship around the world this time. That being said, it is only for sale in local Japanese market but not for international customers.
NTT DocoMo has confirmed release on 18.4.2013 for the NEC MEDIAS W which is only available in black colour. Those who like White MEDIAS W might be disappointed because there are no plans for a White version yet. Meanwhile, we doubt if NEC really has the sincerity in launching the White in a near future.
The dual screen design looks fine but still quite sidetracking what the consumer market expects for a flagship phone. It has a 4.3 inch 960 x 560 display if you open it up and the dual screen will make a 5.6 inch bug display. It is powered up with a Qualcomm MSN8960 dual core processor and 1Gb RAM. It has 16Gb internal storage and a 8.1 mega pixel CMOS rear camera. The latest MEDIAS runs on Android 4.1. With two screens on the same phone, we doubt if a 2,100 mAh battery would be enough.
NEC has been backtracking since the popularity of Samsung has eaten away most of the Japanese firms’ market share. Sony, the Japanese giant phone and electronics maker, also suffered from the overwhelming strength of Apple and Samsung together with some rising stars in Mainland China. NEC’s sold its mobile office and therefore it seems the MEDIAS W is going to be a remarkable last smartphone item from it.
