Will there be one day our smartphones run faster than PCs or Macs? You knew it! The answer is YES! At the MWC 2013, ST-Ericsson announced the first processor with ARM framework that is as fast as 3GHz Quad Core processor which is called NovaThor L8580, It could be faster than many of the current desktops and laptops.
Most of the CPUs in the PCs are running at 2.5GHz and 3GHz is almost the maximum for quadcores. The NovaThor L8580 Quad Core Processor uses 28nm FD-SOI as production technique and a Cortex-A9 framework, it integrates a 600MHz PowerVR 544 Display Core. The processing and imaging power has significantly improved 20% – 35%. Also, ST-Ericsson said it is 35% more energy efficient than many other brands (of course! it has almost doubled the speed of the current processors working on smartphones and tablets).
In terms of the network it supports, the L8580 will support 3GPP Release 10, LTE Cat 4 (Max. Download Speed 150 Mbps). In addition, it supports LTE-FDD, LTE-TDD, HSPA+, GSM and TD-SCDMA cellular network.
This processor can also work with bluetooth, GNSS(CPS+GLONASS), FM, WLAN, Wifi Direct, Miracast and NFC.
We don’t know yet about the price and release date of such a gorgeous processor but hopefully this will bring a breakthrough to the smartphone and tablets future.
