If you are following the news recently, you will definitely know that there is a Face Unlock Function on Google Android 4.0. But, it seems that Apple also applied for this patent.
According to this patent, this technology will be used on iPhone, iPad and Macbook. When the user walk closer to the device, the device will start facial recognition. If the authorization is complete, the device will be unlocked. The principle behind this mechanism is to measure the distance between users eyes, nose, ears and mouth. This mechanism can also store more than one face, therefore the unlock mechanism can be shared with whole family or company.
Recent debates say that the ICS Face Unlock can be faked by placing photos in front of the device. Apple hereby claims that their technology will not be faked because it can also recognize the light and environmental conditions of the picture and determine the photo as a fake and requite true human beings’ face.
Google has this technology implemented first while Apple is holding such a patent. It seems the patent fight between this two mobile device giant will not end shortly.
