Update: Apparently the 3200 error is caused by Apple server being flooded and not being able to download the full iOS. Try again when the traffic is low (such as middle of the day). I did mine around 1500PST and got it to work on the 2nd try.
Excitedly, I went ahead and tried to upgrade to iOS5. Upon waking up my iPad 2, the battery was down to 18% which was low for a iOS upgrade. You do not want the battery to die mid way through the iOS upgrade. I had to put off the upgrade and charge my iPad before making attempt.
After charging to 100%, I connected my iPad to the computer and loaded iTunes. It asked to upgrade iTunes to 10.5 first which went without a hitch. Then the ultimate message appears. The holy grail, iOS5. Would you like to upgrade? “HELL YES!” It then goes through backing up the iPad. You know the drill.
After a long 30-40 min, the Apple equivalent of blue screen of death appears. I get a message, “The update was not successful, please restore your iPad and try again <error 3200>.” I don’t have the exact message, I was too shocked to remain cool to obtain screen captures. Irritated, I tried to restore my iPad but got a message that it was in recovery mode. I tried to do a restore using iTunes and that failed also.
Now my patience level breached code red and I updated my Facebook status with my frustration and warning to all that upgrading to iOS5 will break your iPad.
I’m a drama queen, I know. I’m a drama queen with a bricked iPad 2 thanks to iOS5.
I did a full reboot on my iPad and PC (yes, I use a PC and not a Mac if it matters..)
But I do what all geeks do. Did I report the bug and wait until a updated iOS comes out? No, I put aside everything including getting water and going for a piss and go brute force attempting the upgrade again. After an agonizing 45 min (it felt longer this time ok), I finally got it. What annoyed me a bit is that I got no message that it was completed and that it was safe to unplug iTunes. But to show proof, here it is!
The iMessage is hot. I like that the most. No more embarrassing silence when asked what is your Whatsapp userid. I have yet to test out the other features. No Siri More to come!
TIP: Make sure you do a full reboot on your PC / MAC and iPAD / iPhone before you begin. Most friends I have talked to failed to upgrade the first instance. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.
